I have a 3 inch doll baby. String joints and diaper is glued on. On back of diaper is "made in japan" and neck of baby "Japan". Has little swirl of hair made into head of doll. Spuinty eyes and flat ears. Very small mouth.

The other doll is 9 1/2 inches with wire coming from each limb and rubber band holding them together. She is a light weight doll. Skin is cracking. She has swirl on top of head, and hair is painted on doll. Any idea?

This baby looks like the one I got for Christmas, 1947 or 48. Mom said they were very popular that year so I got several...they were sets of twins in buntings of blue or pink and I think dressed in only diapers. Mine were lost in a flood except one.

Japanese Bisque
by: Anonymous

These little babies were popular in the twenties and thirties. They are copies of German baby dolls of the same era, and are usually painted bisque. Some came with clothes, and open mouths with a pacifier. The German dolls often served as Christmas ornaments. I have a friend with a whole box of them. I have one dressed as a Native American infant with a Mohawk cut. I like them very nice, and often use them in dollhouses. I have seen them sell for thirty to fifty dollars, but they came for as little as two to five dollars. In 1970, I bought my little Mohawk baby for fifty cents in Laramie, WY.
